setting root password during install

I am a relative newbie in Linux and am trying out different distros to see what suits best. Installed Kubuntu 5.04 and am quite pleased with the look of it.

My problem is that I cannot su- into root as the install does not allow the insertion of a root password. All other distros that I have tried allow this.

Can anyone help with this problem.

Thanks in advance

Jim

Code:
sudo passwd
It'll ask for a confirmation password (your current pass), and then you'll enter the UNIX password you'd like for your root twice.
