Seemingly random crashes on Ubuntu 10.04

Recently installed 10.04 on a new Thinkpad Edge... It actually works great but from time to time, particularly when I've recently plugged my charger in I think, it will freeze and go to a black screen with white vertical lines at which point it's unrecoverable and can't access other terminals. After that it will repeatedly just crash to black when on the internet or whatever. Despite all this it does work for plenty of time otherwise.

A friend suggested the graphics card on here was too new, and so I have updated it using the hardware drivers admin tool but the problem has still persisted. Really have no idea what else to try so would welcome any suggestions.

Should probably also mention that either of the crashes I am unable to recover anything from.

Welcome to LQ.

It seems it could be a good many things. Any of these help (Google knows it all)

Also check logs in /var/log/ for errors. And try
dmesg |less
and see if anything interesting shows.

That's ATI video? you need xf86-video-ati-6.13.0 and a very recent system, (or radeonhd-1.3.0 with an old system and r600/700), or fglrx drivers. Mention your kernel (uname -r) and what driver you are using. Check in /var/log/Xorg.0.log
