I have had Ubuntu 6.06 for quite some time and I have never run into this problem until today. I feel that one should be able to update one's kernel to fix any bugs or correct any communication problems between hardware or even software.

Any ideas on how to fix this problem or is this still a known issue?

Apparently it's a new issue. I, too, have never had this problem before, and I came here to ask the same question. Perhaps it's not just me or my system...

Additional info: Updater gives the error, "This update requires the removal of software. Select 'Mark all upgrades' in Synaptic Package Manager, or type 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade' in a terminal".

I tried both. Synaptic acknowledges "all upgrades have been marked" It does not show what's been marked, and the 'Apply' button remains unavailable.

The terminal responds,
"The following packages have been kept back:
linux-image-386 linux-restricted-modules-386
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 2 not upgraded."

Does anyone know how to fix this, or is it a problem with the packages?

EDIT: I didn't realize this was a broken thread... In the original, someone posted a link to a bug report. Problem should be solved in the near future.
