Running Ubuntu on 400Mhz

I 've been thinking on installing Ubuntu on a IBM Thinkpad with 400Mhz and 256 ram. Will it run ok? or is it to much for the laptop?

Thanks in advance.

The 256 will really help and probably make it doable. I put it on a 233 with 64 and it could barely run. Good luck!

Thanks, anyone has any advice on how I can optimize ubuntu? maybe stripping out some software I don't really need...

I'm only going to use it for surfing and programming

I did it.

My machine is a 433 Mhz with 256mb RAM and it runs OK. The only problems I have had are not due to the slow system. The only things I can see where you might have problems would be the video drivers and modem. What make of laptop are you going to use?

An IBM Thinkpad 600e.

Great to know it will work fine, are you using 5.10 o 5.04?

Right now, 5.10 but I used to use 5.04. I tried 4.10 but it wouldn't recognize my sata card. Actually I dual boot with WinME.

Download the live disk and try it out. I run 5.10 on various PIII 500mhz desktops and it works very well. 256 ram is fine--mine typically uses about 128Mb of memory with the Gnome loadeed and no applications open. I loaded extra stuff too, didn't even try to tune it.
