Ubuntu does not have the root passwd set by default because they prefer sudo. To do stuff as root, you would need to precede all commands with sudo e.g. "sudo apt-get install someapp". The password you would need to enter is your own user password. To give root a password and turn your system into a classic Unix system, then do "sudo password root". There are many past threads that discuss the root issue in Ubuntu, so please do a search and you will find lots of useful info.
