What driver are you using? Is it the AMD driver, from AMD, or this is the free version from the Linux kernel developers?

If you are not sure, you should be able to do this:
Code:
lsmod
and look through the list to find out which video driver is loaded.

Also, what have you tried so far?

Usually resolution changes are in the System Settings of your desktop, but it could depend on what desktop environment you are using. Also, sometimes there are separate config menus for proprietary drivers.

Did you install the driver from the AMD site or from the Ubuntu Drivers control panel? Generally, it is much better to install drivers from the System Settings > Additional Drivers panel, rather than going out and letting AMD or some third party wreak havoc on your system.

If you can, try uninstalling the driver (I believe AMD ships an uninstaller along with its installer) and then reboot. Desktop should re-appear, so log in, go to System Settings, and then find the Driver panel, and install AMD drivers. That should work a lot better for you.

Big monitor. What resolution is it supposed to function at?

Next, what are the resolution outputs available from your video card?

Finally, the max resolution from HDMI, I believe is currently 1920x1080, but specs do change.

Depending on the output capability of your video card and the input capability of your monitor, you may need to get a Dual-link DVI cable to achieve a resolution of greater than 1920x1080.

You may want to look into DisplayPort. You will have to check your video card and monitor to see if your devices have the DisplayPort capability.

AMD's Catalyst Control Center.

Don't use that. Go to System Settings, and in the Hardware section, select Display to change your resolution and refresh rate.
