Use the logs Luke...
What do you find in /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

Is your config sane, check your /etc/X11/xorg.conf?

Thanks,

running ubuntu 12.4 LTS 64 bit, if it is relevant im running HDMI to my LG HD TV i will also need to get audio over HDMI but one thing at a time

Turns out that the amdconfig --initial / glfrxconfig --initial was never run. Now I cannot edit xorg.conf, seems to be a read only. I have tried chmod and chown but no joy, says read only file system.

When in recovery mode do all the file systems mount?

Cheers

BTW when i opened the xorg.conf file in vi there is only two lines of input none of which points to my display or anything remotely related to displays, this is a problem.

You shouldn't need recovery mode to get X working, but
Code:
mount -o remount,rw /
will let you edit stuff.

Thanks heaps m8

got the rw permissions now and have used the amdconfig --initial and it wrote successfully! now when i startx the server reports NO SCREENS FOUND when i look in the xorg.conf file
it look as it should screens ="DEFAULT" and all monitors/screens show up as "0" how do i resolve this problem? the device is located at the correct position PCIE1:0:0 (which is x16 3.0) so i don't think it is switching to on-board video.
i had a look at my lfgrx log file and my chip is supported

thanks,

No errors (EE) in the log (warnings (WW) are ok) so it sounds like you don't have a window manager running. At this point if you want to continue using startx then check your .xsession file or restart your display manager (gdm, kdm or xdm) with its init script (eg /etc/init.d/kdm restart)
