Recover deleted files using recovery tools on Ubunty

Dual boot Windows and Ubuntu. Norton AV fragmented the external drive while on Windows, destroyed all files and now need to recover them.

Any recommended tools to recover the missing files in Ubuntu or other?

Contact Norton about the problem, you paid for their software, You might post more details on exactly what happened. The best software for this purpose that I am aware of is testdisk/photorec. Google it and you'll get their site which has detailed instructions on it's use.

shayno90,

I have successfully used PhotoRec (80GB of photos recovered from a friend's HDD. This was "completely wiped" according to a recovery company and therefore no data could possibly be salvaged), TestDisk and SystemRescueCd.

NB PhotoRec recovers all manner of file types, not just photographic ones like jpeg and tiff.

Essential tools in your recovery armoury:

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec_Step_By_Step

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download

Good luck.

Which filesystem is the external drive formatted as?

If NTFS, you could try ntfsundelete from your Ubuntu machine.

a user with an identical name has opened an identical thread elsewhere.
they have been more talkative there, and one of their main concerns was that testdisk/photorec is not comfortable enough to use.
the advice given was pretty much the same as here.

Used PhotoRec, for a free program it is sufficient but ultimately as good back up is the only solution here.
