hmm if i'm not mistaken, sound recorder records what comes from a sound input device (hardware)
what you need to do is determine HOW the sound is coming off the internet (flash video, streaming audio etc..), perhaps even give us a link to the site where you are trying to capture the sound from, how you would 'record' sound from the internet differs based on how it's delivered to your computer.

note -- some sites forbid this and asking how to do so (or providing information on how to do so for that matter) on such a site would violate the LQ TOS, especially since such sites tend to place protection on the content to prevent, so please do include more details so you aren't yelled at by the moderators

Ok fair enough. Stay tuned and I'll put an example on my webpage. That should satisfy the censors. I'll post a link when I have done this.
Thanks, for your quick response. It's 3:07 am here and i need some sleep, but I'll get back shortly

Ok I don't want to download the file from the internet just record the audio I'm hearing from the speakers. Here's the deal. I have uploaded a file to http://www.3ryd.com/excerpt.mp3 This is part of a public domain recording(It says so at the beginning) which should satisfy the mods.
Please tell me how I can record the sound from this recording to my computer as an mp3 or wav file.
Thanks,
Paul

But that's the thing - Where is the sound coming from? That's what makes the difference.... If anything, you can create some sort of pipe of wherever the input comes from. Most likely many ways to do this, just depends on the source of the audio.

hmmm. would it help if I put a video with audio on youtube? It doesn't make any difference to me. I'm just trying to get this done and get help in doing it. If I legally download audio from youtube, no one should have a problem with that. I think you are missing the point. Record what U hear is a valid technique in windows and also Linux I do believe.
Thanks,
Paul

I was just asking a general question man.....
But on topic, read the following man page - http://linux.die.net/man/1/arecord
If you are using ALSA, you can use arecord to record direct speaker output. Check out the following link for a good in-depth tutorial on how to do this - http://carthick.wordpress.com/2007/1...using-arecord/

Cheers,

Josh

Perhaps try installing either streamripper or audacity. These programs should be able to record the audio for you.

Just a tip, I once used a patch cord to connect the earphone socket to the microphone socket on my netbook as a workaround for a similar situation. (it was a once-off need and the patch cord was handy )

to qlue .... your advise about using a connector from the headphone jack to the speaker jack was exactly what I was looking for... audacity worked perfectly afterwards for recording internet audio..thanks!
