Re:Partitioning Hard Drive with 7.04 beta

Hi Guys, I just downloaded the 7.03 beta and when i get to step 4 of the installation it has a manual and auto partitioning option, automatic uses the whole physical disc, and manual doesnt see my C: partitions, I have XP installed here and want to dual boot, I have 6.10 installed but lost my mbr when i reinstalled windows, not sure how to recover that but how do I partition the disc in 7.04, I had a similar problem in 6.10 in that ubuntu wouldnt install unless i deleted the set aside partitions during the installation, but 7.04 doesnt see any of my partitions on my first drive, the other 3 arent partitioned.

Thanks fr any help.

Cheers

I suggest you keep your current Linux installation, boot Ubuntu CD & repair grub, archive your linux files, then consider update to 7.04. Ubuntu 7.04 is first Linux that has wanted to delete Windiz & insisted on trashing my /home partition.
7.04 seems only to allow 4 partitions & does not allow control of formatting. It wiped my /home partition. It kept my Windiz XP partition & Windiz still runs.
Select manual partitioning. You will need Windiz partition not formatted, a swap partition, a / partition, a /home partition. I use 20 GB for / partition, 2 GB for swap.
Pull down menu for selecting partition type for 7.04 partitions did not work. First partition was left as NTFS. Second partition FS set as swap & was done. For third partition, I clicked in box till it selected, then typed "/". For last partition, I clicked in box till it selected, then typed "/home". Install was done with default packages.
First update of system was 341 packages, including new kernel. New kernel won't boot. Runs fine with old kernel plus 340 updates.
Maybe better for you. My Asus Z80K, Athlon 64 & ATI 9700 seems to cause trouble with Linux & Windiz.

A /home partition isn't required but some users prefer /home as a separate partition. Linux has been limited to 4 partitions for some time. By making your 4th partition an extended partition you will be allowed to create as many partitions in it as you desire.

Thanks for the replies guys, I downloaded 6.10 again since my cd did a fantastic disappearing act, and the installer doesnt see any of the partitions on my first drive at all the same as 7.04, last time i installed 6.10 it did, maybe i downloaded a newer build, do they expect you to wipe a windows installation just to have the pleasure of usin linux?
