Program install problems and sound issues.

Hey there!
Due to the death due to the infinite login loop on windows 200, I switched to ubuntu, everything works fine (excluding sound) and i understand how to operate it, It doesnt detect my soundcard and I have no idea what it is, its integrated, and a Po$. As for the isntall problems, when i go use the ./configure or makefile/make commands it just says invalid directory or x is a directory, and debian packages using apt-get isntall x.deb doesnt seem to work, ive cd'd into the directory and it says its not a valid directory/file and its beginning to piss me off.

Thanks in advance.

P.S. I installed wine and its not in any of my menus! I can access via shell but not menus, how do I get it there?

running breezy.

1) For the sound card, can you post the output of the commands /sbin/lspci and lsmod?

2) What exactly are you trying to install? It'll be easier to help you that way. Normally, you don't use apt-get to install individual *.deb files. You would use dpkg. But if the package is in your repositories, you would use sudo apt-get install packagename (not packagename.deb).

Here's a bit of a guide for installing stuff in Ubuntu Breezy. You are aware that you're about two versions behind the current Ubuntu (Breezy is 5.10, the new Edgy is 6.10).

im upgrading ubuntu right now and hoping that will fix most of the problems, I got the .deb figured out, using Gdeb. As for sound no luck, if the upgrade doesnt fix the sound problem i will post the output of those commands here. I am trying to install QCUSB drivers from a tarball, when I go to execute ./configure (0r any other command it says not a valid directory/file.)
By the way, is there any way to put a program manually in the program menu? I have wine installed but it doesnt show up in the program menu.

pljvaldez 11-07-2006 05:03 PM

I'm sure there is a way to add stuff to the menu, but I haven't ever done it (I'm a CLI junky).

Oh, when compiling something from a tarball, make sure you've done sudo aptitude install build-essential to install a compiler and the development libraries.

Well, I updated to dapper, soundcard didnt work and tarballs I havent figured out but ill apt-get those files you listed. when i run lsmod from shell i get this:

Hmm yeah, doesn't seem to get recognized :( I hate to give this advice, but why don't you buy a cheap sound card? I bought a $10 c-media genius card long ago and it's been working for me with no problems.

Hawkmed 11-08-2006 07:10 PM

Thats the plan.

rappol 11-28-2006 04:47 PM

That's because it's lowercase LSMOD, not ismod.
