Processing an audio file from the speakers with LAME

I would like to save the output a file being played through the speakers as mp3 using LAME. Is this possible?
Thanks,
Paul

One way: worked for me

I'm sure there must be other ways, (probably better ways) but this worked for me. I used a patch cable from earphone output to microphone input, and recorded the session using Audacity, and then saved it as and mp3 (audacity uses lame for that last step).

There is also a commandline way to save audio/video output within the computer without any external patch cords. I have used that program, but can't now remember what it is called, or whether it can be used to record just the sound, and save it as mp3.
