[SOLVED] Problems installing Ubuntu 9.04

I was trying to install Ubuntu 9.04 on an old(~7 yr old) desktop the other day and after I told it to begin installation it behaved like starting up (i.e. showed th ubuntu logo with the bar) and after a few seconds the screen went off and displayed a blue rectangle with the words "None Supported" in it, and basically got stuck.

Anyone know what the issue may be and what flavor of ubuntu(or other user friendly Linux) might be best for installation instead of 9.04?

Old systems don't have much memory. Find out how much you have. I found the newer releases need about 256M. If you have less, it will fail.

It has about 1GB of memory, according to the specs.

Are you sure it is all working? Memtest will verify the amount, and its condition.

There may be another issue. Try another distro. It might help if you posted some information on the make and model of the system.

Did you check the download for md5sum?

Did you burn the image on a good CD? at a nice slow rate?

Will the install CD boot on another system as a live CD?

Thanks for the advice Camorri- I'll test that. Since the system is my SO's I don't have it by me, but details will be posted.

I do know that the CD is OK since its the one I used to install ubuntu on my current desktop a couple of weeks ago.

as to another distro- which of them is the most user friendly?My SO is not a very technical person.

PCLinuxOS or Mandriva One, either, both work on all systems I have tried them on. Both have lots of applications available through the online repos.

Ubuntu is not good at using tricky monitors.

There are a lot of options at boot.
And I find them difficult to use ,
every time, I install Ubuntu.

But if you can get to the line with options,
add e.g. : fb=1024x768 ( or fb=800x600 )
And may be noapic nolapic

There are some menu's describing these options.

It was indeed a monitor/video card resolution problem- the default resolution of the video card was too high for the monitor.I managed to install it finally after downloading 9.10 and booting from a usb stick in safe graphics mode, with major help from a friendly Linux guru
