Problem with screens: games hijack my resolution/frequency

Whenever I launch games such as RTCW (wine), Enemy Territory, etc my screen resolution & frequency are constantly being changed. Does anyone know why it happens & how to prevent it? Like I'll set my resolution (Preferences -- Screen Resolution) to 1024x768 @ 87Hz. After I've launched ET and come back to the desktop the resolution is still 1024x768 but stuck on 50Hz and the whole right side of the screen is bent inwards. Thoughts?

ok. I changed from gdm to kdm but still using Gnome desktop. I also uninstalled the nvidia restricted drivers and reinstalled them. for some reason the most affected screen now is the log on screen. playing games is pretty much okay now. dunno what the deal is but i can live with it.
