apt-get install sun-java5-jre sun-java5-fonts sun-java5-plugin
update-java-alternatives --set java-1.5.0-sun
ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so
ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun/jre/plugin/i386/ns7libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so

do a search for
libjavaplugin_oji.so

as root
Code:
find / -name libjavaplugin_oji.so
Then copy the file to your plugin directory of the browser or create a softlink

Code:
ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so
ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun/jre/plugin/i386/ns7libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so

I don't think it is a good idea to have both gnash and the adobe flash plugin installed together. I'm not positive about this, but I think they can conflict with each other. Try removing all flash and gnash plugins using apt-get or synaptic. Then download the linux flash plugin from adobe.com to your home directory:
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
Download the .tar.gz version. Then copy libflashplayer.so to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins instead of firefox-addons/plugins:
Code:
cd ~
tar -xvzf install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz
cd install_flash_player_10_linux
sudo cp libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
Then restart firefox.
