Problem installing Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop 64 bit
 

I'm trying to install the 64 bit desktop version of Ubuntu 10.04 on a new desktop. After the Ubuntu screen with the red dots, the installation halts at the (initramfs) prompt with the message:

"Unable to find a medium containing a live file system" - this is also the only message contained in casper.log.

"ls -laF /cdrom" shows an empty directory so I am assuming there has been an issue with mounting the DVD drive?

The relevant components of the system are:

Motherboard: Gigabyte - GA-P55A-UD3
CPU: Intel Core i7 860
DVD: Samsung Blu-ray/DVD Combo Drive - 5.25" internal SATA,
HDD: Western Digital 1TB, Caviar Black, SATA-III, 7200RPM, 64MB Cache

I'm quite a newbie to Linux so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.:newbie:

Hi amani. I tried using the Alternate Installation CD however the process still fails trying to "Detect and mount CD-ROM". It seems to be looking for it in /dev/cdrom.

Given that it is a SATA drive, would I need to specify any additional boot options? I also noted that in the 'Configuring cdrom-checker-menu', it suggests loading a specific 'module' for non IDE or SCSI drives. Any suggestions as to what that is in reference to?

I did note also in the BIOS that the HDD is set to 'IDE Channel 1 Master' and that the DVD is set to 'IDE Channel 6 Master'. Not sure if that's relevant?

The bios options are important... you should prefer ahci

ata_piix is a possible boot option ... the generic driver may be grabbing the device before this so add

hdc=noprobe

Have you tried to install it from an external device, say, a portable CD/DVD drive? I see you have quite a fancy DVD drive, it could be the support for it is still immature.
