Problem booting Ubuntu install CD on Dell optiplex 320
I get the following messages when trying to boot the Ubuntu 6.06 LTS installation CD:
MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC
PCI: Cannot allocate resource region 1 of device 0000:00:14.0
BUG: soft lockup detected on CPU#0!
At this point the system is locked up.
Does anyone have any idea what is happening or how I can fix?
Also, booting the Ubuntu 5.1 installation CD, gets farther along, but hangs after the line
isapnp: Scanning for PnP cards....
If, when you boot the CD 6.06, you can enter the boot/install command from a command line ( like 'boot:' ), instead of from the onscreen menu, try adding the 'noapic' flag to the boot command. For example, if the booting kernel is named "ubuntu", then enter on the command something like:
boot: ubuntu noapic
And see if that dodges the lockup. I think there is a similar flag for the second issue too, a 'noisapnp' option or something similar.
If when you get the thing fully booted, you will have to make one or two tiny changes in order to permanently correct/workaround the issue.
I recall there are about 5 options on Ubuntu's install/boot screen. Look for one which allows you to add command-line commands to the boot command.
