Hi Kareempharmacist

I tried to remove xmind using the command you told me but it says there is no installed package matching xmind.

Tried to install sockstat but it is saying 'unable to locate package sockstat'

thanks for interest ..
I think you are running on runlevel 1 which is the minimal mode
type the following command to know the runlevel you are running in
Code:
runlevel
then type
Code:
init 3
if 3 didn't work type
Code:
init 2
the you will enter multiuser mode where u can execute the command sockstat
wait and be patient..good things come for those who wait

Sorry I have not been online to reply to your suggestions. I have been ill (a short stay in hospital, but am okay now).
This morning I load a live CD and was able to save the files that I wanted to. I have now performed a clean install of Ubuntu and everything okay.

Thank you for all your help.
Louise
