Angry Power down problems again!! (solved)

Hi again, sorry to start a new thread about power down problems - it's just that the new ubuntu 7.10 is still having acpi problems?!!

On feisty fawn I couldn't get my computer to power down, but after endless days searching the Net someone gave me the solutution to add acpi=force to my boot grub menu.list - Which solved the problem.

Tried the same thing on 7.10 but no dice!! I rebooted to test the acpi=force but it shows that it ignores that info on boot up?

The error I get now is as follows:

Quote:

halt: unable to iterate IDE devices: no such file or directory [238.999406] system halted
I think it is pretty poor show that ubuntu can't seem to sort out such problems!!

Has anybody any ideas?

update

Well, crisis over. I have just been informing the lads over at ubuntu about a possible bug.

First of all, I have been running Clarkconnect on my server for some time but wanted a change, so I chose Ubuntu. I had acpi disabled in bios for Clarkconnect but had no power down problems.

I enabled acpi again and tried again. I edited the boot grub menu.list on boot up and saved and booted my distro. After logging in as root, I tested "shutdown -h now" and the system halted and powered down as normal.

Problem solve so you would think - WRONG!! I rebooted and tried the same "shutdown -h now" command and .....nada!!

Curious and even more curious!! OK, what to try now? Well, I checked the boot grub menu.list on boot up - no entry for acpi=force?! I re-entered saved and checked by opening the file to see if my entry was there Yes no problem.

Well, I booted the distro and tried "shutdown -h now several times over but had the same effect. It would shutdown after entering the info but not after reboot?!

Because I am running the server edition of Ubuntu I have webmin installed as my gui. I rebooted and re-entered the apci=force in boot grub for the hundredth time and went to another computer to check webmin. I opened the file manager and checked the boot grub menu.list and no entry for acpi=force, so there must be a bug in the works some where.

Anyway, I edited the boot grub menu-list with webmin adding acpi=force and shutdown my machine with webmin "boot and shutdown" Yes!!

I have now tested that several times and everything is OK again. So it was partly my fault for not checking the bios and partly a bug in Ubuntu!!

Those of you not using the server edition or webmin can edit the boot grub menu.list with a text editor in Ubuntu.
