Question Panel menu items + launchers disappearing on 10.04

I created a few launchers on panel (simple xterm shortcuts). They all worked fine, but when I rebooted the system, some of them disappeared. (I can still run them properly from $HOME/.gnome2/panel2.d/default/launchers)

I installed VMWare 6.5.5. I was able to run it from the panel's Application menu, but when I rebooted the system, all 3 VMWare menu items disappeared. (I can still run it properly from the command line by simply typing 'vmware').

My system runs 10.04. I don't recall such panel flakiness in 8.04.

Is this a known bug? Any ideas how to fix/workaround this?
