Package not compatible with i386?

Hey!
I tried to install Ubuntu edgy, just to see what it's like. now a huge load of apps won't install, stating that "$prog$ is not compatible with your computer type "i386". Also some apps, notably monodevelop and F-Spot (written in mono) won't run. any ideas?

What's your hardware? Many packages may be i686 won't run if your box is old enough. Could you run "uname -a" in a terminal window and provide the output?

My box is a dell i5/686 (can't remember), with the intel i810 I'm having to resort to to get nVidia drivers installed.
Code:

stjimmy@TREVOR:~$ sudo uname -a
Password:
Linux TREVOR 2.6.17-10-generic #2 SMP Fri Oct 13 18:45:35 UTC 2006 i686 GNU/Linux
stjimmy@TREVOR:~$

EDIT: noticed something, Synaptic seems to think my i686 is an i386. That change things?
