Question package manager error in dapper

I just upgraded to dapper. When I reboot it has an error saying "A error occured, please run package anager from the rightclick menu or apt-get on a terminal to see what is wrong. The error message was: Error Opening the cache (Epening/etc/apt/sources.list - ifstream::ifstream (13 permission denied), E:the list of sources could not be read.)'" Because of this I can only run synaptic and not the normal package manager.

I had this problem with Breezy.

Anyway:

In a terminal do the usual apt-get update or upgrade until you get an error.

The error output should say something like please run apt-get -f

Just copy the command output that they ask you to run and enter that. Then apt-get will rebuild itself and all will be well.

You do not get the exact error messages unless running a terminal referencing apt-get.

E: Opening /etc/apt/sources.list - ifstream::ifstream (13 Permission denied)
torger@ubuntu:~$

torger, this solution is not for yourself, only. Hundreds or thousands of people with the same problem will read your thread in the hope of getting their own, similar, issue done.

You've been requesting support, please just give something back -- in the shape of a reproducable solution (if ever possible).
