Question older KDE version available for Kubuntu 9.04 ?

With Kubuntu 9.04 and kde 4 desktop, is that older 3.5 version of the KDE desktop available in the package manager to install to either replace or to add to the session at the log on screen for that newer kde 4. ?

See this tutorial from the Kubuntu wiki to install KDE 3.5 in Kubuntu 9.04 from the ppa repositories:
https://wiki.kubuntu.org/Kubuntu/Kde3/Jaunty
Note that it says this is a "semi-official remix" of KDE 3.5. So this is something you do at your own risk. I have no idea how well it works, since I use Ubuntu and not Kubuntu.

You might also consider upgrading to, or doing a clean install of, Kubuntu 9.10. The KDE 4.x in 9.10 is probably better than the the one in 9.04 since it is a later version.
I always do clean installs of Ubuntu rather than upgrades. You could try an upgrade to 9.10 if you prefer that.

It looks like the required software sources are added manually, and then I use the terminal as sudo root to install the kde3, and not with the built in package manager then. Does anyone know if the choice of kde 3 or 4 is on the new Kubuntu 9.1 DVD during the install ? Thanks.

KDE 3.5 is not present in the standard Kubuntu 9.10. There is a Kubuntu 9.10 KDE3 remix CD available:
https://wiki.kubuntu.org/Kubuntu/Kde3/Karmic
You can download the CD from here:
http://apt.pearsoncomputing.net/cdimages/
I would recommend doing a clean install of this Kubuntu-KDE3.5 9.10 CD rather than a dist-upgrade.

Question

With a fresh install of the Kubuntu 9.10, then add those software sources to that file, and ran the sudo apt-get install for kde3, I now have both the newer kde4 and kde3 available at the log in screen for sessions. But when in the kde 3 desktop, the programs start menu shows lots of kde4 items listed, so can I just open the menu editor to un-select those, and still have those program menu items while booted in the kde4 desktop ?

That is a good question. Unfortunately, I can't answer it. I have never used KDE in Ubuntu; and I never had more than one version of a desktop environment installed at a time in any distro.
Anything you do with the menu editor can be easily undone. So it should not hurt to try it and see.

Question kde3 error message

With both kde3 and 4 installed and available to boot into, the kde3 gives an error message at every log in with the KDE Crash Handler which is this "The application nspluginscan crashed and caused the signal 11,(SIGSEGV). So does anyone know how to fix this ?

Question

So with that error message name may be an application, program, or even a system service called; "ns plugin scan" which runs at boot up in KDE 3 of the Kubuntu 9.10 ? And how do I search for a file called ns plugin ?

Smile kde 3 update

I searched for a file by that name with Konqueror, but found none. But in the Control Center under Services Manager it shows; Network Status Daemon running, that could be the; ns plugin scan item which gives that error?

Sorry to get back to you so late....
I am not very familiar with KDE. And I have never used KDE in Ubuntu. Checking the known issues on the Kubuntu-Kde3-Jaunty website finds this:

KNetworkManager is as buggy as ever. nm-applet (from package network-manager-gnome) is recommended, but not installed by default.
So try and install network-manager-gnome and see if that fixes the problem. NOTE: If you are using wicd to manage your network,
network-manager-gnome is incompatible with that, so it will remove wicd if you install network-manager-gnome.
Hope this helps. I don't know what else you could try.
