"nv" to "nvidia" in xorg.conf causes X not to start


changing nv to nvidia causes X not to start below is a copy of xorg.conf, i have installed these drivers twice now, followed the instuctions and running into a brick wall.

tell us the error, and confirm that the nvidia.com drivers are correctly installed.

ive checked and now i reinstalled the drivers and put nvidia in and now x says nvidia kernel 1.0-7174 is there but But X ITSELF has 1.0-8762

Sounds like you compiled with a recent driver but have an older one that you're trying to use. Depending on which Nvidia card you have, an older legacy diver might be required. For me, when X fails like that I had a video driver kernel mismatch. Editing xorg.conf to driver "nv" lets you use the GUI environment to get the correct driver.

it should be somewhere like /usr/share/hwdata/pci.ids, just edit it manualy
