Welcome to LQ.

The ns2 prerequisites are : $ sudo apt-get install \
g++ g++-4.4 autoconf automake make patch libtool libxmu-dev xgraph

$ tar xvfz : Was used once.
With a 'tar' later than year 2004 you can do $ tar xvf

* Compressed archives are recognised automatically, it is no longer
necessary to specify -Z, -z, or -j options to read them. «
