no video after running updates Xubuntu 10.10

This is an Xubuntu install on a memory stick. I had the video working perfectly after the initial installation of Xubuntu. After I ran the updates and rebooted the system I had no video. It says ,"Server is already active for display 0, if the server is no longer running remove /tmp/.XO-lock and startup again"
I looked around for a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file but it does not exist. What next?

Did you remove /tmp/.XO-lock, as suggested in the message?

actually it turned out to be a conflict with the nouveau and the nvidia modules loading up. I now have video but had to disable the nouveau module in order to only allow the nvidia modules to load. The only problem now is when I try and use this memory stick on another machine that used the nouveau driver is has no video. Is there a way to load the nouveau driver along side of the nvidia stuff so that I can have the best of both worlds?

I am having the same trouble, could you go into detail as to what you did to completely remove the nouveau module? I'm using Mint but I suspect what you did might work for me too

Thank you for your time.

I apologize I usually give my solution to the issue that I resolve. The first thing that I did was to boot without loading the nouveau module by adding this to the kernel line of grub at the end of the line containing quiet splash:

PHP Code:
 nouveau.modeset-
or boot into cli and blacklist the nouveau driver from loading:

PHP Code:
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf:

blacklist nouveau
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1494503

Once that was done I added the nvidia driver in two ways:

Download the latest nvidia driver from the website:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html

or the nvidia-96 driver

http://www.ubuntuupdates.org/packages/show/219248

I hope this helps you out
