My suggestion is that the new kernel that has been installed via the update, has caused the sound card not to be recognized or the module not loaded. Open a terminal and run 'lspci' and post the output. also run 'lsmod' so we can see what modules have been loaded. Which kernel are you running now?

Then we can make some suggestions.
