no sound in gmplayer and no output in mplayer

i installed mplayer 1.0 pre7 following the steps given in www.oldskoolphreak.com/tfiles/hack/ubuntu.txt (just changed 1.0pre5 to 1.0pre7)..earlier, had installed the alsa drivers using synaptic..

now, when i try to play any file using the gui, i get the video but no audio..it says "could not open/initialize audio device -> no sound"..so i went to preferences->audio and checked up the drivers..
"OSS oss/ioctl audio output" had been selected..
so, i selected "alsa ALSA-0.9x-1.x audio output" and restarted (g)mplayer..now, when i try to play any file, it just hangs and i dont see any output..no sound/video..

so i decided to check using the command line version..and again no sound/video

here is the output i got..
Code:
root@njiggs:/home/normal/downloads/lind/video/MPlayer-1.0pre7 # mplayer /mnt/f/Videos/English/Red\ Hot\ Chili\ Peppers\ -\ Californication.MPG

Are you running Gnome? Both gnome and KDE uses some sort of daemon to output environment sounds, such as clicks and error messages. Try disabling or enabling it to see if it helps. If you are running Gnome and Ubuntu, you can right click on the sound icon on your Desktop and change a few settings too, such as output drivers. Play with those values and see how it goes.

There is also another way of installing mplayer without compiling anything in Ubuntu. This guide tells you how to accomplish that:

Good luck!

Cool!. I've personally had that problem too with on-board sound cards. Are you using an on-board one? It works fine with emu10k1 based chips and alsa (some sound blasters) though (I mean, both sound daemon and media players at the same time).

Good luck!
