No KDE on Kubuntu 9.10

I get a console login prompt when booting. This is true of the beta version on HD updated after final Karmic was released, as well as the CD made after that release date. The beta was working fine.

Also my second hard disc is not seen by the latest and greatest. There is just one version on the menu, plus the fail-safe and memtest. Fail-safe doesn't bring up anything that standard doesn't.

I have tried kdm several times. It wouldn't run.
