No internet on wired connection for no reason
I just recently installed kubuntu and got everything set up. Internet worked just fine out of the box on a wired connection. After a few days it just stopped working and I have to idea why. I didnt change anything, I didnt mess with anything. Its on the University of Texas internet service, wired into my dorm.
Like I said it worked just fine, then it just stopped. Im not very good with linux yet so can you please be very specific with any ideas? Thanks so much for your help, Davis |
Something has changed. Has your school changed the way it passes out IP addresses? Has it went to Fixed IP addresses and you are set to recieve from DHCP? Have they changed their DNS server? Have they changed who can acces their network? Is your CAT5/6 unhooked from the router/switch? Can you ping an address by IP if you can't reach it by URL? Could be bad cable, unhooked cable etc. What is the output to as root
Code:
ifconfig If ifconfig gives you a valid address for the device then ping yahoo at 216.109.112.135 (DNS issue) http://www.linuxhomenetworking.com/ |
ping www.google.com
oddworld@oddworld-desktop:~$ ping 219.109.112.135 PING 219.109.112.135 (219.109.112.135) 56(84) bytes of data. --- 219.109.112.135 ping statistics --- 185 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 184030ms oddworld@oddworld-desktop:~$ ping 192.168.1.1 PING 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=250 time=0.813 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=2 ttl=250 time=0.817 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=3 ttl=250 time=0.802 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=4 ttl=250 time=0.805 ms --- 192.168.1.1 ping statistics --- 4 packets transmitted, 4 received, 0% packet loss, time 3009ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.802/0.809/0.817/0.021 ms oddworld@oddworld-desktop:~$ WTF?!?!!? Davis; Since XP also lists your system as "disconnected", it's not Linux or your PC- it's your modem or service. If you're connected to a cable jack through a modem, try this: Shut down your PC, and unplug the modem's power supply. Wait about 5 minutes, then plug it back in. (sometimes mine needs reset that way...) When it re-establishes internet connection (all lights on), boot your PC and try logging onto the 'net. If you're connected through a LAN wall jack, then technically you are through a router (the school's). If that's the case, or if resetting the modem doesn't work, you need to contact the school's administrator. Hope this helps! Bill |
Its connected through LAN. I contacted the University of Texas, but theyre telling me that because Im using linux, my hardware isnt supported. They told me to update my drivers and hope for the best.
I can manually input my ip address and other settings to allow me to get online, but this is kind of a hastle because its a dynamic ip that changes every few days. When I use DHCP it tries to give my computer the ip: 192.168.1.103 (Dont know why that might be important) Why is it that XP internet works fine, yet kubuntu's wont. (Im not saying XP is better, I just want to know what I can do for my kubuntu) Well tell me if youve got anymore ideas, Im pretty new to the switch and am hoping to say goodbye to M$ forever. |
Sorry... I was assuming that since your XP output listed the device as "not connected" that it, too, could no longer log on. Since that's not the case, you might want to move this thread to "hardware" for better exposure in the proper category. Just click on "report" and ask the moderators. They'll be more than happy to assist.
I'm not too familiar with hardware problems- Ubuntu installed and works perfectly on my PC. Always worried it would be just the opposite before I finally tried it.:D |
