While trying to upgrade to feisty, my computer stalled (I was an idiot and tried to open a program in the background) and I did a hard re-boot. Upon re-boot, I got nothing from the most recent kernel (2.6.20-15), so I went back to 2.6.17-11 and had to boot into recovery mode. From there, I was able to log in and get to the desk top. I did an update and was prompted to re-boot. Upon reboot, I booted into a new kernel (2.6.20-16) and got nothing after the login screen. From all the kernels, I can log in, but get nothing after the login. I am able to get into the terrminal, but am not experianced enough to do much. Threw some other forums, it was suggested I do a few differnt apt-get type commands, all of wich give me an error relating to dependency problems.

on log-in screen make sure you have choice gnome by default.

how would I check that??
