NFS Locking

I have a couple of errors with and NFS export as shown below. Any idea how to allow locking?

exportfs -ra
exportfs: /etc/exports [1]: Neither 'subtree_check' or 'no_subtree_check' specified for export "192.168.16.74:/home/peter/Transfer".
Assuming default behaviour ('no_subtree_check').
NOTE: this default has changed since nfs-utils version 1.0.x
exportfs: could not open /var/lib/nfs/etab for locking
exportfs: can't lock /var/lib/nfs/etab for writing

/var/log/messages is a HUGE file ..... sorry but I cannot get through it to find references to the event there is just too much to work through...

I have just looked at the permissions of the etab file and they were root / root and so I changed them to my user name and the error goes away but another error appears which is that it is not possible to write to the etab.tmp file. I cannot find that file ... not even a hidden file.

and the other file ....

cat /etc/ecportfs
cat: /etc/ecportfs: No such file or directory

# /etc/exports: the access control list for filesystems which may be exported
# to NFS clients. See exports(5).
#
# Example for NFSv2 and NFSv3:
# /srv/homes hostname1(rw,sync) hostname2(ro,sync)
#
# Example for NFSv4:
# /srv/nfs4 gss/krb5i(rw,sync,fsid=0,crossmnt)
# /srv/nfs4/homes gss/krb5i(rw,sync)
#
/home/peter/Transfer 192.168.16.74(rw)
