Networking together Unbuntu and XP boxes - how to configure ?

Hi there.
I've undertaken a minor project which involves linking up a Ubuntu machine and an XP machine.

Neither of these machines can be connected to the Internet, or any other network so I cannot upgrade / install packages via apt etc.

I've installed 7.04 server edition on the Ubuntu machine. The intention is to run web/ftp servers as well as samba off the Ubuntu machine for use by the XP box.
During the installation I was asked to configure my network and I chose the option to configure manually and later.
The server software is now installed and I would like to begin the process of configuring the various network connection files. Do I have to have the XP machine linked up ( via xover patch cable) to the Ubuntu machine during this configuration procedure ? I would like some help on this next step. I am not sure on how to go about editing my
/etc/network/interfaces file and what details it should have. Do I have to mess about with DNS configs as well ? I assume that I will have a static IP address ?? What other config files need editing , eg. /etc/hosts ?
Pointers in the right direction would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
Uncle.

I would give them both static IP addresses. Set one as 192.168.1.2 and the other as 192.168.1.3. Set the netmask to 255.255.255.0

In /etc/hosts on the Linux box, you'll need to put in your own IP and the IP and name of the Windows box. The entry should look something like this:

192.168.1.2 windows-box-name windows-box-alias-if-there-is-one

You may need to create an lmhosts file on the Windows box and put in the IP and name of the Linux box too, so that you can point to it by name.

Somewhat scattered list since its late, but maybe that will point you in the right direction...
