Need how-to Ubuntu Core for x86

Hi,

I would like to try out and look into Ubunto Core that is available for Oneiric. (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Core) I have a computer running a Kubuntu 11.04 (x86_64). I wish to evaluate Ubuntu Core on this machine without destroying the current installation. My idea is to install Ubuntu Core on a USB disc or on a separate partition on the hard drive.

I am looking for some advice how to succeed with my task to install Ubuntu Core, preferrably on a separate disc. Any ideas? I have basic knowledge about linux som if someone could give a simple how-to I will be very happy.

Thanks in advance!

You realize that Ubuntu Core is not like a regular distribution - you are expected to use it as a basis for creating your own. Thus, it is not clear what you would be "evaluating it" for.

Nontheless - installation to a usb HDD is usually just the same as a regular installation. You make sure your boot order selects the external drive first, that's usually it.

Hi Simon,

thanks for your reply. I hope I have realized what Ubuntu Core is and I want to evaluate for use as a platform to build my own distribution on.

What do you mean with "...regular installation..."?

Regards,
/Peter

You can install on an external usb HDD the same way you install on an internal.

I would recommend that you turn off your internal drive, in bios (assuming you can) before installation. I do that with my external that I use for a test platform to make sure that there is no interference with my "real" installs.
