Need Help Booting Thin Client on EdUbuntu Terminal Server

hi all,

i've set up an edubuntu terminal server at a local school. unfortunately, the client computers are old and don't have the pxe option when booting to the network.

therefore, i need to boot from the floppy or by cd per the instructions here:

http://www.edubuntu.org/GettingStarted

in order to do this, i eventually end up here:

http://rom-o-matic.net/5.4.3/

unfortunately, this is where the instructions end.

1. how do i get the information from the nic to correctly choose the nic/rom type? i can run dsl linux from a cd so i can enter linux commands into the terminal.

2. which rom output format do i use? the original instructions talk about enabling pxe emulation. does it apply here?

3. what configuration are required to boot to my terminal server? are the defaults ok? do i enable pxe emulation here? i'm a bit concerned because the first two pxe options rely on i386 architecture and my server is a dual core opteron. does the i386 refer to the client or the terminal server?

thanks for the help. i'm looking forward to getting this hooked up and convert these super slow 233 MHz win98 computers into relative speed demons on edubuntu.

If you don't get results to your questions here you might want to try posting to the Ubuntu forum site, make sure your post has ltsp in the heading and I am sure you will get answers. I am not saying that this site is't great. I have had many questions answered here, it's just that ubuntu ltsp has some differences than other forms of ltsp. And some of it's programers frequent the forums on a regular basis.

take a look in your /tftpboot/lts/boot/bootroms/ directory, you should find a Universal Boot Disk image, along with some instructions. It won't work for everything, but is definitely worth a shot...

If your directory structure is different, you may do a:

# locate bootrom | grep Univ

which should return the location of the Universal Boot Disk image if it exists on your system..

Good Luck!

I think you can just use command lspci to get what you need. Then get your boot media from etherboot using the web page for that nic. You can build it for options too but pxe is the default.
