Nautilus shows incorrect locations

(Ubuntu 11.10) with Gnome fallback (ie no Unity)

Under Computer which should only show actual directories, Nautilus shows the absolute reference to Desktop, plus a bookmark to Desktop which I don't want and it doesn't show the Downloads directory. I may have created it (as a bookmark) when I first started using this setup as the Desktop itself didn't show files.

It's not removable by right-clicking as Remove is greyed-out or by Menu /Bookmarks/Edit Bookmarks as it doesn't appear.

It may be relevant that I changed my preferred download destination to Desktop at some point - but that can only be done in a browser can't it?

The Desktop link on the left pane in Nautilus should indeed show what is on the desktop. Post the output of:
Code:
ls ~/Desktop
It should show any shortcuts or files on the desktop and should match what is seen in Nautilus for the desktop.

I am not using Nautilus presently, but this is the same behavior seen in Thunar on XFCE. If I right-click on the Desktop (or home or Trash or File System) links on the left pane in Thunar, the option to remove them is grayed out. Only links on the left pane that I have created myself are removable by me. I do not know if this can be changed or not.

I don't think this is relevant in this case.

That does list what is on the desktop.

Agreed, but I am talking about a bookmark/link to Desktop, not the absolute reference (not sure of the terminology here) to Desktop. There is an absolute reference to Desktop there as well. I should have made that clear in my initial post so I have edited it to that effect and attached a screenshot.

It is also slow to open - there is a extra process "Opening [directory name]".

I will swap to using PCManFM if I can't fix the problem, is it possible to make that the default which is used for the "Places" pull-down menu instead?

I've switched to Debian and it's no longer a problem.
