My Ubuntu on laptop won't shutdown
I just installed the Ubuntu 5.04 on my laptop. However it won't shutdown by clicking the shutdown button in Gnome. It just halts right after the monitor turns black (Before the shutdown operation lines displayed). What's wrong with it? Thank anybody who can help me with such a problem!

Try going to one of the virtual consoles (C-M-F[1-6]), log in as root, and type
Code:
# shutdown -h now hth --Jonas |
what make of laptop do you have?

I tried the command: $shutdown -h now, but it still doesn't shutdown at all, halting right after the screen turns black. Weird!
My laptop is Toshiba Satellite 3000. Is this problem related with the ACPI config? If then, what should I do? Thanks! |

/path/to/your/kernel nolapic This usually works for many laptops. You find the menu.lst file here: /boot/grub/menu.lst /rjpa |
Actually I found that even the logout doesn't work. Maybe this is the point. Anybody have the same problem? How to deal with it?
Thanks! |

Often, when I shutdown or reboot, my notebook hangs as soon as X is closed and I can see only a corrupted screen and so I have to use the power button in order to turn off it. Doing so I obtain corrupted files next time I turn on the pc. When I had suse 9.2 on the same pc it didn't happen and it occurs only if nvidia driver is installed. I don't know if it is related with a framebuffer problem, but using vga=normal at boot time don't fix the problem. Any suggestion? Xwang |
I was having that same problem with my laptop. I have a Nvidia card and I installed the Nvidia drivers from the website. I had to make some configuration changes they can be found here:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...a+black+screen I can now use the terminal, I had to go into my bios and change the laptop to use both CRT and LCD. I now have no problems with shutting down or running the Nvidia drivers. Also being that I am using Ubuntu I had to remove anything to do with Nvidia other then the Nvidia settings package. This included nvidia-kernel common, nvidia-glx. Hope this helps you out if you have an Nvidia card. |
I've tried, but I still have my random problem.
Maybe I've to disable also agpart! Xwang |
