My review for Ubuntu Feisty
First, a little back story. I started out a few years ago in Linux with RH 9.0, then went to FC3, FC4, then on to Slackware 10.0, of which I have been an avid fan and I am currently on 12.0. My wife is in Kuwait, and wants a laptop with Linux on it. Slackware is rather intense for someone who doesn't understand nor wants to understand the fundamentals of an OS, so I chose to go for Ubuntu for her machine because it is much more novice friendly.
So, to get myself familiar with how Ubuntu works I installed it on my home machine, and I must say I am fairly impressed. I've never been a huge fan of Gnome but it does what I need and that's enough for me. The Synaptic package manager is certainly much easier than Slackware's method of handling software. The only difficulties I have run into came from trying to get Grub to recognize I had multiple HDD's (which I was finally able to fix) and getting the Nvidia driver to install (which Envy solved rather handly).
To be honest, the only thing I can really complain about is the disconnected feeling from my computer I get from using it, as it almost makes things too easy. I still prefer Slack, but I won't be removing Ubuntu anytime soon. I still, and always will I'm sure, prefer the CLI for my admin tasks, but my wife doesn't want to handle that so Ubuntu for her and my 6yo son.
