my first try at live ubuntu, no sound

So far fairly impressed with how ubuntu live cd is working.

I can get sound from built in sound off dell mb, but no sound from sound blaster card. When I try going to system/pref/sound and change from intel to CAO106, after closing box, it will change back to intel.

What am I missing? This is my first try at anything with Linux, so you are dealing with a true NOOB here.

Also curious that the player (Totem) can only play my FLAC files, no mp3 or acc.

I did try reading through some guides, but was unable to find what I thought I needed.

Thanks for any help.

The reason totem will play only FLAC and OGG is because MP3 and (I think) ACC are proprietary file formats. You would have to install some minor 'addons' to be able to play them.
Ubuntu doesn't ship with these 'addons' due to legal reasons.

When you are in the preferences box, does the test button result in the sound playing okay from the sound blaster? This may have also have something to do with Ubuntu just being run off the live cd rather than an installation version. You might try disabling the on-board sound from the BIOS settings to see if it forces Ubuntu to use the sound blaster.

For your mp3 and acc files, it sounds like you will need to download the codecs from the restricted repositories. This can be done through 'Add/Remove' by installing the 'Ubuntu restricted extras' package.

Take a look at these threads for more sound blaster help...
