Multiple KDE/Gnome desktops
Hello again,
I wanted to know if it was possible to run more than one X window system in Ubuntu by opening a free shell(crtl+alt+F1) and opening KDE or Gnome etc. and be able to switch back between them. I did hear of a command to start up or something like that to do such a thing. Any ideas?
I think if you use a different user, you can use gdmflexiserver.
You might be able to run several different desktops at once, like one KDE, one Gnome, and one windowmaker.
If you wanted to run multiple of the same desktops as the same user, I think you would have problems because it would be using some of the same lock files in your home directory. Not sure about that though... Any reason you don't just use the multiple desktop spaces you have in Gnome or KDE?

well I mainly wanted to be able to switch from KDE to Gnome without restarting the xserver, but whenever I tryied to run Gnome and XFCE along with KDE it said that xserver was already running.
I think you have to start a session on a different display. Typically the xsession is run on display :0. So you'd want to start another session on display :1, etc. I forget how to do this though...
If you are in KDE (not sure about Gnome), you can click on the Kmenu and go to "Switch User" and "Start a New Session" that will take you to a login screen and you can choose what desktop environment to rin from there.
