Now from my experience when a module shows usage thats higher then 0; its green flag for me aka it 'should' work

Another issue: he is unable to mount samba shares directly in his filesystem with slack this works out of the box, the module smbfs is present but i dont know if the standard ubuntu 5.10 (64bit) kernel allows this as i can remember u have to enable 2 options; if this isnt the case will apt-get will allow me to fetch the kernel sources so i can just make a new kernel with this option enabled or when this is done i should also have to recompile mount utility to enable samba????

help would be appreciated

that sound looks like its working- I have the nforce 3 version of that mobo and it has the same sound card, and it just works on mine. I got sound the first time I started gnome. Have you done the most obvious things and checked the speakers are plugged into the correct port on the card (the green one) and are switched on?

Other than that I can't suggest anything.

edit: I know what the problem is: 2 soundcards - remove the PCI one and he will have sound. The 2 drivers are arguing for control of the sound, and it's confusing esd.

I dont think you have to remove the pci card. First check the obviuos things like the previous poster said: is sound muted perhaps? Check the menu 'system preferences' and 'applications, sound and video', and check the volume applet on the top panel.

Did you install the w32 codecs? http://help.ubuntu.com/starterguide/C/faqguide-all.html
