hello, i have tried to post this in several Ubuntu forums, but no answers so far.
when i first started the Ubuntu 11.04, it said "..missing graphics..." something and that it would start in classic mode. Perfect, everything is fine, the mouse pointer doesn't move. not even with an external USB mouse.
Just to clarify this, do you mean that neither the built-in pointing device nor the external mouse works or the that built-in pointing device works and the external mouse doesn't?
It might be helpful to know which model HP Pavilion. If you could capture the full error message, that would also help, perhaps by snapping a picture with a camera if it goes by too quickly to write down.
I would try this: Boot to the Ubuntu Live CD and see whether the pointing devices work with the CD. If they do, then it's likely the install is borked. In that case, it might be easiest to reinstall, after backing up crucial files to external media first. With the mouse not working, it might be easiest to do this from the command line.
I have the similer problem as well. Except my optical usb mouse works fine, but not the built in pad one. They both worked fine prior to updating from 10.10 to 11.04 ubuntu OS.
How does one install 11.o4. I previously used the update manager to install 11.04. I am using a Asus netbook with win-xp prior to switching over to Ubuntu 10.10. Would surely appreciate your help here. Jon

How does one re-install 11.o4. I previously used the update manager to install 11.04 after it was announced. I am using a Asus netbook with win-xp prior to switching over to Ubuntu 10.10. I have downloaded 11.04 but do not know how to install it again. Would surely appreciate your help here. Jon (fitlnx).

How did you install 10.10 the first time?
You can just do a clean install of 11.04 right over top of your current install. You can use Unetbootin to create a bootable usb flash drive to install Ubuntu: http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/
Or you could install 11.04 from an external CDROM drive if you have one.
NOTE: If you do not have a separate home partition, you will need to backup your data before reinstalling Ubuntu.
This post/thread is not from my account and I did not post it. Some one my name of santiago did or there is a mistake on person that originated it. Please void it out of my fitlnx account ...... FYI
