Mouse clicks stop working after time.
I have a problem which has developed on a Ubuntu 9.04 Gnome Desktop install. After what appears to be a random time, mouse clicks stop working. The pointer still responds to mouse movement, just clicks stop. This is the same for two different USB wireless mice and a PS/2 mouse so it's not mouse hardware specific. Initially the left click stops but right clicking will still bring up a context menu, but after a short time that stops too. This problem has only developed within the last few weeks. The same problem does not occur in KDE which is installed on the same system. Could anyone offer any advise on how I might go about fixing this problem?
Thanks in advance.
First off, the series of what works and what does not work really rules out several things to check on. (Which is probably why no one has responded - your description alone rules out what people would try to work on.)
Since your hardware works and your operating system works and your system board works, this says to me there is only one last thing to try.
Reinstall Ubuntu 9.04 with Gnome Desktop
(After you've backed up all your important files, etc. of course!)
It's really difficult to say exactly what's going on with your left mouse button clicks, but with all that you've presented for analysis, that would be the most expedient next step in this scenario.
The only closest experience I've had to this is when my keyboard would quit working after a few hundred keystrokes. But that was back in the day when we actually had a keyboard controller chip on the system board that I replaced to fix the problem.
Since these mouses are USB, there is no keyboard controller chip involved.
Give that a try and let me know what happens.
