mounting usb from command line - hotplug?

Hi all,

I recently switched to Ubuntu and am still trying to figure out a few things that seem to behave differently.

In Fedora / SuSE when I plugged in a USB key, a mount directory was created automatically (e.g. /mnt/sda1 or /mnt/usb) so that as a user I could then mount the key from the command line.

In Ubuntu, the only way for a user to mount the key seems to be clicking on the desktop icon.

I guess, this is about the hotplug system configuration. I have no clue how to start about this - but I'd very much like to configure it so it behaves like it did under the other distros.

All help welcome,
f

use the command "pmount" instead
you run it as a regular user (no sudo) and the syntax is "pmount [device] [label]" the label is optional but it will create a directory under /media with that name.
To unmount it you can use "eject [device|label]" to completely eject the device, or "pumount [device]"
For a user to mount with pmount they need to be in the "plugdev" group. (default is for users to be in that group anyway)
Code:
pmount /dev/sda1 label
Code:
pumount sde1
Code:
eject sde

I agree, pmount is pretty much the best way.

Another alternative is to get ivman to start on bootup, but I haven't figured out how to do that myself yet

you can always try:

Code:
sudo ivman &
in a terminal, but it'll stop working the next time you boot up your computer

Correct me If i'm wrong, but in Gnome my Usb key just appeared when I plugged it in and then I could copy, read and do all my stuff on the Usb key throught the file browser. Is that what you're talking about when yous say "cliking on the desktop icon ?"

add the line
Code:
ivman
to /etc/rc.local

Hi binary_y2k2 and Gzou,

thanks for your help. I tried pmount and it works beautifully. ivman looks interesting and I'll bookmark it for future exploration.

@ Gzou: Yes, the gnome/kde automatic fs recognition is what I meant by my description. Anyhow, I can tunnel that now with pmount.
