Set up backup preferences to make backup daily to a seperate folder

Folder is /home/ram7lc/downloads

The backup file in downloads is

Cannot open file to read contents.

file command states this is a data file

gedit error cannot open file

Nano opens but only some text and ^A^ 000+ characters.

What program is used to backup the data. Your Ubuntu manual may say. I believe that .tar, .tar.gz, and .zip type backups would be recognised by the file command. One program that might be used is dar. Also check the logs. The backup dialog may produce log messages in /var/log/messages. Also, even if you used a GUI to setup the backups, you may actually be using a graphical front end for a script, that sets up the parameters for a command like tar or dar. If you can find this script, it will call the program used to make the backup.
