So what's the deal on NTFS? Anybody got a reliable ntfs module working?

I have no idea, but it's got me ticked off. I mean, hell, I went to college with two guys that wrote (at least part of) the freaking NTFS read-only drivers, back in '93-4

Twelve years later, it's still read-only??

Geeez! NTFS that old!? Anwyays, Knoppix 3.4..3.8 came out with NTFS drivers...
then they removed it.. it actually uses the Windows XP SP1 .sys files and stuff.

But I'm stuck with a stuffed drive, will have to investigate to see if it's just the filesystem,
or if the drive has physical damage.

PS Don't trust NTFS. The single only practical disadvantage of FAT32 is <4GB files. Who cares?!

I haven't used it, but INSERT, a Linux Live rescue cd, says it has "full read-write support for NTFS-partitions using captive". Sounds like what you were thinking of; emulation of the Windows drivers.

Why not rescue the date from the "stuffed" (i.e. borked?) drive, w/ the ntfs ro facility found on virtually any live CD distro, and then investigate.

Why do want ntfs rw in this case? (I can understand wanting it in general.)

If you don't mind buying software Spinrite (grc.com) is really good for hd hardware problems & it now comes as an M$ independent bootable image. Costs about 80 bucks though ...

Yeah, I have a feeling it's the NTFS write support that has stuffed it...

About SPINRITE... It is good, BUT SUCKS -->> It Is SLOOW on broken drives. WHY?
Geez, HOW HARD CAN IT BE to just skip sectors that arent available for access in picoseconds?
