I have a memory stick, a 2GB transcend Jet Flash (JF V30). My ubuntu os
6.10 edgy eft used to recognize and mount automatically. I tried to mount a large directory onto it and my OS has not been able to recognize it since? Is there a way to salvage it or any files on it?
Go to the console and take a look if the device is being recognized at all. Look at the output of "sudo /sbin/fdisk -l" and see if the partition is listed. If so, notice which device it is, such as /dev/sdc1 for example.
You can also use "sudo tail -f /var/log/messages" and plug in the pen drive and see what the logs say. ( Some distro's may post to a different log file. )
If you know the device, you can try to repair the filesystem with the command "sudo /sbin/fsck.vfat /dev/sdX1" where X is the device letter. If it has more than one partition, maybe change the "1" as well.
It is also possible that the filesystem isn't corrupted and you can try mounting the partition somewhere manually. See "man mount" for details.
Please note that I assumed that the filesystem on the pen drive is fat32. If you reformatted it using a different filesystem like ext3, then use the corresponding fsck program. You can also use the form "sudo /sbin/fsck -t vfat /dev/sdXN". Also, double check that the partition isn't mounted before running fsck.
Thanks for the reply. The device does not show up when I do a sudo fdisk -l but I get cat /var/log/messages
and get...
"[ 1085.723278] end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 0"
When I take the disk out and cat /var/log/messages I get
"[ 1167.957634] usb 4-4: USB disconnect, address 3"
