MBR Problem because of Crashed Disk

I had 3 disks on my box.
1. 160gb Win XP(ntfs)#1partition Master
2. 41gb Ubuntu (ext..) #1partition
3. 60gb Free Space (win32) #1partition

This is the problem:
I've been using mainly the Linux and the disk totaly crashed. (let me just say that the boot sequence doesn't properly recognize the 2 disk anymore(Ml#456?? something like that, but it should say maxtor something)) So with the 2 disk in the trash. I get a grub error 25 (missing files) (yah no disk, right).
The xp setup disk can't even load up it dies on the first stage. I can't even open up a recovery console.
But i can boot other live linux cds (phlak,ubuntu...)

This is what i did:
now the bootup sequence in disks is :
1. 60gb (win32) now WinXP
2. 160 (ntfs) WinXP (with bad MBR)

How can i correct the MBR of the 2nd disk(160)?
mbrfix only works for the master disk

A little help pleezzz

can you be more explicit in what U mean by drive 2 (linux) in the trash?

2) fixmbr is a MS command that works by overwriting the MBR of the first detected drive and assumes C partition is the first partition of the first drive.

3) you may note that MS has failed to understand that users like yourself may want other drive configs.

there are a range of answers all good...

A1 fix your linux and lets let grub chainload to what drive you like
A2 get yourself a smartbootmanager cd and let it boot a defined hard drive
A3 see my tutorial .....use MS to chainload to another MS but....you will need linux to dd command the mbr of the 160 drive and its faulty but theres more

a4.....swap cable and jumpers assuming ide drives so 160 is now master on controller 1.....now fix mbr will work then A3 has some relevance

I am sure theres more thats a start

good luck

drive 2 linux (trash) = /dev/hdb1

The drive is now no more. Maybe one day a hard drive clock... but for now somewere where i can't even look at it.

Now i've put up xp on the 61gb drive, just so that i can backup all the files. Then i'll put the ubuntu on that one.
I'll try then what you sugested.
thx for youre answer
