Maxima encountered a Lisp error

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
When I put this command into wxMaxima OR Maxima in a terminal--

Code:
solve([z^2+2*z+(1-%i)=0], [z]);
I get this reply--

Quote:
Universal error handler called recursively (:ERROR NIL
CONDITIONS::CLCS-UNIVERSAL-ERROR-HANDLER
""
"Couldn't protect")
Universal error handler called recursively (:ERROR NIL
CONDITIONS::CLCS-UNIVERSAL-ERROR-HANDLER
"" "Couldn't protect")
Maxima encountered a Lisp error:
Error in CONDITIONS::CLCS-UNIVERSAL-ERROR-HANDLER [or a callee]: Caught fatal error [memory may be damaged]
Automatically continuing.
To reenable the Lisp debugger set *debugger-hook* to nil.
It works in the Windows version (but note that's NOT the same machine). After some googling I found bug reports, but no solutions. I haven't had any other indication that the memory may be damaged. Is there any way to fix this?

If anybody has any interest, I finally solved it by updating Maxima beyond what was available in Synaptic. I used the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Maxima and I used the CLisp .deb package (the SBCL .deb wouldn't work). Now the command runs just fine.
