make command not found

Hi, I'm trying to make a driver from a source code. So I cded myself to that folder and typed sudo make. But it said the command is not found. How can I get make to work. I'm running 2.6.12-10-k7. I checked on synaptic and make is there but its for 2.6.12-9-386. How can I get make to install on this kernel though?
